Artists will understand the term “negative space”: it just refers to the space between objects in a drawing or painting, and it can be an important element in art. I thought I’d play around with the idea of negative space in embroidery, and came up with this version of a seabird.
The bird shape itself has no outline: it exists only as a gap between the blue waves. It was an interesting exercise and I think I may try to push it further, maybe by using painted fabric as a background and then just embroidering the negative space rather than the subject of the embroidery
